研究内容
 研究活動は、主としてエナメル上皮腫を中心とする歯原性腫瘍の増殖と分化メカニズムの解明と、口唇口蓋裂の包括的治療に関する研究を行っている。
 歯原性腫瘍に関する研究では、同疾患の治療成績を向上させるために、臨床的ならびに病理組織学的、免疫組織化学的見地よりその病態や生物学的特性を明らかにし、診断や外科的治療などの臨床面にフィードバックすることを行ってきた。なかでも、準悪性腫瘍とされる、エナメル上皮腫については、腫瘍の増殖メカニズムの解明のために発育浸潤様式の組織形態学的検索、増殖および分化に関する分子生物学的特性を検索している。また、これらの研究結果をもとに、エナメル上皮腫の保存的治療を実践し、顎顔面形態ならびに機能を温存しながら、顎骨切除療法と同等の治療成績を収めてきた。さらに、歯根嚢胞についても、嚢胞上皮の発生・増殖に関わる分子メカニズムの解明を通して、歯原性嚢胞上皮の感染防禦機序における役割について研究している。
 口唇口蓋裂については、チーム医療体制の整備によって医療の質の向上を図ると共に、口唇外鼻形成術後の三次元的形態評価,顎顔面発育障害や言語障害などの病態の解明とその対策について研究を行ってきた。また、顎裂部への二次的骨移植術により、本疾患患者の機能的ならびに解剖学的な口腔機能の回復を図ると共に。移植骨の吸収などの合併症に関わる因子を追求し、治療成績の向上を図った。近年では、口蓋裂術後の瘢痕形成の分子メカニズムの解明、ならびに、創面新規被覆材の開発などの研究に従事している。

国内における社会連携活動としては、鹿児島大学病院にて、口唇口蓋裂専門外来の活動の一環として口唇裂口蓋裂児出生前、出生直後の産科医院への往診システムを立ち上げ、口唇口蓋裂児の口蓋床による超早期栄養管理、患者家族への心理的サポートに努めている。また,2006年、鹿児島口唇口蓋裂親の会「もみじ会」を再設立し、顧問として運営に携わり、年2回の講演会活動,屋外活動,交流会などを企画運営している.
国外においては、1995年より2年間、インドネシア共和国のハラパンキタ小児産科病院口唇口蓋裂センターに駐在し、現地医師、歯科医師らに口唇口蓋裂チーム医療に関する知識や技術の伝達を図ってきた。その際、低栄養により死亡する口蓋裂児が多い同国の状況に対して、出生直後からの口蓋床導入によって哺乳状況を改善し、また、顎誘導処置によって外科治療成績の向上に取り組んだ。1997年,帰国後は同病院のsupervisorとして技術指導,啓蒙活動を継続している.1998年以降は、インドネシア、バングラデシュ、エチオピアなどの発展途上国に短期出張し、口唇口蓋裂患者の外科的治療を中心に現地スタッフの指導を行うと共に、同疾患患者の抱える諸問題に対するチーム医療の重要性について啓蒙活動を行っている。また,2011年以降,日本口唇口蓋裂協会等のサポートのもとエチオピアにおける口唇口蓋裂海外医療活動を展開し、上述の社会活動が評価されて、第46回MBC賞(南日本放送社賞、鹿児島大学病院口唇口蓋裂専門外来代表として)を受賞した.
