Flow chart of orthodontic treatment

The stages of general orthodontic treatment are as follows.

1)Initial consultation

First, we gather information regarding the patient’s occlusion, jaw, mouth, and tooth alignment. Next, we briefly explain the orthodontic treatment; including appliances, cost, and duration. Once we have obtained the patient’s consent for the orthodontic treatment, we introduce the doctor and arrange the next appointment ? where examination begins.

2)Clinical Examination

Depending on the state of malocclusion, we perform any or all of the following inspections.

  • Morphological examination: We take oral and facial photographs, radiographs, and impressions for creating an orthodontic study model.
  • Functional examination: We analyze the trajectory of mandibular movement, electromyography, and bite force.
  • Detailed inspection of the temporomandibular joint: We perform computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) to check its condition.

3)Diagnosis

We analyze the examination results, and then present and explain to the patient various orthodontic treatment plans, appliances, and treatment schedules. We start the orthodontic treatment after obtaining the patient’s consent regarding the treatment plan.

4)Treatment

Once therapy commences, the patient is asked to visit our hospital regularly to ensure successful treatment. The appliance is adjusted about once every 4 weeks, and the progress is observed once every 2 to 6 months. In addition, we perform clinical examinations every year to confirm the effectiveness of treatment plan. At the same visit we may also re-diagnose and modify the treatment plan as needed.

5)Retention to maintain good occlusion

After active treatment and removal of all appliances, the patient should wear a retainer in order to maintain orthodontic control of both tooth position and occlusal relationship.

6)Follow-up

After retention, the patient visits our clinic for an oral health examination once a year.
